Osun State Police Command Promises To Be Apolitical In Local Government Election

The Police Command in Osun State, have assured residents that they would continue to remain apolitical in the forthcoming local government election in the state.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Yemisi Opalola, made the remarks in a chat with reporters on Thursday in Osogbo, stressing that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had deployed mobile police to the state to ensure that the crisis that happened on Monday does not repeat itself, in order to foster peace in the state.

She therefore admonished residents in the state to go about their lawful businesses without fear, threat or intimidation.

9News Nigeria reports that there was crisis on Monday between All Progressives Congress, APC, and People’s Democratic Party, PDP, over a Court of Appeal judgement.

According to PDP, the judgement made by the Court of Appeal, in Akure, on February10, did not reinstate the sacked APC chairmen and councillors in the state, however, APC insisted on their return.

Crisis, however, erupted on Monday when both parties were laying claim to local government secretariats across the state, as the Police in Osun later confirmed that six persons lost their lives during the crisis, while others were injured.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, had affirmed that the local government election fixed for Saturday would hold, as a statement by the commission’s Information officer, Saidat Isiaka, urged the electorate to shun any form of fake news suggesting that the election would not hold.
