The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) says North-West has witnessed displacement in the past few years, with over 1.3 million displaced persons as of February 2025.

The IOM Nigeria Chief of Mission, Ms Dimanche Sharon, stated that at the launch of an European Union (EU) supported project, ‘Conflict Prevention, Crisis Response and Resilience (CPCRR)’, on Monday in Katsina.

“Too many families have been displaced, too many farms abandoned, and too many lives disrupted by insecurity.

“Yet, in spite of these challenges, the people of Katsina and Zamfara have shown resilience, determination, and the will to rebuild,” she said.

Sharon said that project would also adopt climate-smart solutions, adding, “because 84 per cent of communities depended on agriculture, and peace could be impossible if people cannot farm, graze, and share resources sustainably.

“It is about building bridges between communities, strengthening trust in local governance, and ensuring that no one is left behind.”

Sharon said they would put communities at the heart of every decision, so that solutions were locally owned, inclusive, and lasting.

“This includes focusing on addressing the root causes of conflict, restoring livelihoods, and strengthening social cohesion, particularly in areas affected by violence and climatic shocks,” she said.

The EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Gautier Migno, said that they would continue to work with IOM, Mercy Corps and the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) to bring lasting solutions to the insecurity in that part of the country.

Migno further said they would collaborate with communities and the local governments because they have efficient methodologies to addressing the challenge.

In his remarks, Gov. Dikko Radda, said the gathering was more than a ceremonial event, but a powerful affirmation of shared commitment to heel the wounds, restore dignity, rebuild communities and secure lasting peace for the people.

“EU Ambassador to Nigeria, your presence is not just diplomatic, it is symbolic of solidarity, compassion and shared humanity,” he said.
