No fewer than 20 people have been killed following fresh attack by armed bandits in communities in Talatu Marafa Local Government Area of Zamfara State, marking another deadly episode in Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

According to reports, the attackers invaded several communities between 3:00p.m. and 4:00p.m on Wednesday, targeting residents and opening fire on anyone on their path.

A community representative, Nasiru Lauwali, said a large number of armed bandits stormed the affected villages, leaving scores of residents dead and many others fleeing for safety.

The attacks comes amid a surge in violent raids across northwestern and central Nigeria, where armed gangs have continued to terrorise rural communities through killings, cattle rustling, and kidnappings for ransom.

Meanwhile, security operatives in Kwara State reportedly neutralized at least three suspected bandits during an operation on Tuesday and successfully rescued a kidnapped businessman, Tuhkur Sanni.

Kidnapping remains one of the Nigeria’s most pressing security challenges, with criminal groups increasingly targeting communities, travellers, and schools in exchange for ransom payments.

Recent data indicates that kidnappers generated more than $1.6 million in ransom payments in 2024, highlighting the scale of the growing insecurity.

Earlier this month, Nigerian security forces rescued dozens of schoolchildren and teachers who had spent 56 days in captivity after being abducted from three schools in Oyo State.

Authorities also arrested eight suspected kidnappers during the rescue operation, while an unspecified number of suspects were killed.

Defence authorities said the abductors had planned to use the hostages as bargaining chips to demand the release of some of their detained commanders.

The latest killings in Zamfara have once again renewed concerns over the persistent insecurity affecting several parts of the country, with residents calling for stronger security measures to protect vulnerable communities.
