Nine royal families in Oyo State have rejected the appointment of Oba Akeem Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, citing that the presentation of the Staff of Office in Ibadan contradicts Oyo tradition.
The families, collectively known as the Atiba 9, argued that Owoade’s appointment disregards Oyo’s customs and traditions, and also violate the Rules of Law, emphasizing that the recognition of the monarch without seclusion is not inline with the ancient city’s tradition.
Prince Sina Afolabi, representing the Adeitan Royal family, expressed concerns that Governor Makinde’s actions have reduced the throne to an object of ridicule noting that the choice of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye, was done in accordance with Ife’s custom and tradition.
The families clarified that they bear no grudges against Owoade or another candidate but oppose the flawed process that led to Owoade’s appointment.
