Fear and panic swept through the University of Jos ( UNIJOS) community on Tuesday after the beheaded body of a middle-aged man was discovered on a farmland located within the university environment.
The victim’s severed head was missing from the scene, leaving students, staff, and nearby residents in shock over the gruesome incident.
According to preliminary information, the deceased was neither a student nor a staff member of the University of Jos but a farmer who regularly cultivated crops on farmland within the institution.
A senior university official disclosed that the victim was well known in the area and is believed to have arrived early Tuesday morning to tend to his farm before he was attacked by unidentified assailants.
The official added that, judging by the nature of the killing, the attackers appeared to have deliberately targeted the victim before fleeing with his severed head.
The victim’s family has since been notified, while arrangements are being made to evacuate the body for further investigation and burial.
The University of Jos confirmed that its management is aware of the incident and stated that the institution’s Information Directorate would issue an official statement regarding the tragic development.
Efforts to reach the spokespersons of the Plateau State Police Command (PPRO) SP Alfred Alabo, for confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
The horrific discovery has heightened fear across the university community, with students calling for a thorough investigation into the killing and stronger security measures to safeguard lives and property within and around the university environment.
Security authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible for the gruesome killing.
