Nigeria’s passport has been ranked the 45th strongest among 54 African countries in the 2026 Henley Passport Index.
The country also ranks 90th globally, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 44 destinations.
Several African countries ranked ahead of Nigeria in the latest index, including Seychelles, Mauritius, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Morocco, Eswatini, Malawi, and Kenya, which make up the continent’s top 10 strongest passports.
The Henley Passport Index, compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can visit per time without obtaining a visa in advance or by securing a visa on arrival.
The rankings are widely regarded as a benchmark for measuring global mobility.
They are also influenced by visa-waiver agreements, diplomatic relations, and international travel policies.
