Jos — 24-year-old man arrested over alleged involvement in mob assault that led to 25-year-old’s death in Jos.
The Plateau State Police Command has arrested another suspect in connection with the alleged killing of 25-year-old Ibrahim Mbaya, a University of Jos graduate as investigators into the incident continue.
The Command described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in its ongoing investigation into the death of Mbaya, whose alleged torture by mob following accusations of theft also sparked widespread public outrage.
The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Yusuf Christopher Beskeni, who was reportedly arrested following credible intelligence gathered by detectives investigating the circumstances surrounding Mbaya’s death.
The he Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Alfred Alabo, disclosed this in a statement issued in Jos on Wednesday.
According to the Police, preliminary investigations indicate that Beskeni allegedly participated in the assault of the deceased.
The Command alleged that the suspect helped tie Ibrahim Mbaya to a pole while he was being subjected to physical assault and torture by members of the mob, the assault subsequently resulted in Mbaya’s death.
Following his arrest, Baskeni has been taken into police custody as investigators continue efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals suspected to have participated in the incident.
The latest arrest is part of the Police Command’s ongoing investigation aimed at establishing the full circumstances surrounding the death and determining the individual roles of everyone allegedly involved.
The Acting Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, DCP Usman Sheikh Adamu, has assured the family of the deceased and residents of the state that the Police Command remains committed to ensuring that everyone found responsible for the death is brought to justice.
The Police said investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as more suspects are identified and apprehended.
Authorities have also reiterated the need for members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands, stressing that allegations of criminal conduct should be handled through lawful investigation and judicial processes.
Mbaya, popularly known as “Ibee”, died on July 27 after he was allegedly assaulted by a mob over accusations of stealing a mobile phone at an off-campus residence in Jos, Plateau State.
The incident triggered widespread condemnation and renewed calls for an end to mob justice.
