Renowned Yoruba poet, Olanrewaju Adepoju, has passed away at the age of 83, 9News Nigeria learnt on Sunday.
Adepoju, who was not only a poet but also a writer, artist, and religious leader, breathed his last on Sunday evening at his residence in Idi Orogbo off Ring Ring Road, Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a brief announcement on Sunday, Adepoju’s son, Adejare Adepoju, shared the sad news, stating, “Baba has gone to rest. Inna lilahi Wa innaa ilaehi Roojiuuna. My Dad, Olanrewaju Adepoju, Rest in Peace.”
Later on, he took to Facebook to pay tribute to his beloved father, describing him as a passionate human rights activist, accomplished author, and gifted poet.
He emphasized that his father’s life’s work was dedicated to creating a more just and compassionate society.
In his message, he urged everyone to continue his father’s advocacy for a brighter future. “Rest in power, Dad,” he concluded. The family also confirmed Adepoju’s passing and expressed their grief in a statement, saying, “With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our dear Father, Chief Mas’ud Olanrewaju Adepoju. From Allah we come and unto Him we shall all return.”
According to the family’s announcement, Adepoju will be laid to rest on Monday at 11 am, in accordance with the Islamic traditions.
The news of Olanrewaju Adepoju’s demise has brought sorrow to the literary and artistic community. His contributions as a poet and writer have left an indelible mark on Yoruba literature and culture. His words will continue to inspire generations to come. May his soul rest in peace.
