President Muhammadu Buhari, has approved the nomination of former Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo Iweala to replace Yonov Fredrick AGAH for the election to the position of Director- General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) scheduled for 2021.
This was disclosed on Thursday in a joint statement by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Permanent Mission to the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Council for Africa (UNECA) , addressed to all embassies and permanent missions in Addis Ababa.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has withdrawn the candidacy of Ambassador Yonov Fredrick Agah for election to the position of Director- General of the World Traded Organisatio. In this regards, Mission also wishes to inform that His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the nomination of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala to replace Ambassador Agah as Nigerian candidate for the positoion of Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), for the term 2021- 2025 at the elections scheduled to hold in Geneva, Switzerland in 2021,” the statement said.
Nigeria also called for the support of the AU member countries and the mission and embassies in Addis Ababa, to support the candidacy of Iweala.
“The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Permanent Mission to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) avails itself of the opportunity to renew all Embassies and Permanent Mission in Addis Ababa,” the statement added.
