The Oval Office became the stage for a high-stakes display of American leadership on Monday as President Donald J. Trump hosted a rare summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and top European and NATO leaders.
Gathered around the historic Resolute Desk, leaders from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Finland, and senior officials from the European Union and NATO held a closed-door session with Trump.
The meeting, described as one of the most consequential of the year, centered on long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, expanded Western military assistance, and a possible framework for eventual peace talks.

White House aides said Trump used the Oval Office’s symbolic weight to emphasize U.S. primacy in shaping the course of the war.
At the heart of discussions was a proposed $90 billion U.S. weapons package, potentially coordinated with European partners, to strengthen Kyiv’s defenses.
European leaders echoed their support while stressing the need for unity and a clear roadmap toward negotiations with Moscow.
Zelenskyy’s presence was a powerful signal of Ukraine’s reliance on U.S. leadership.
The Ukrainian president, who has made repeated appeals for sustained Western support, welcomed Trump’s assurances, calling them “a critical step toward securing Ukraine’s future.”
“This was not just a policy meeting—it was a projection of power.
“Trump wanted to show the world that decisive diplomacy still runs through the White House.” One Washington-based observer remarked.
While no immediate peace deal was announced, the summit was widely interpreted as a message to Moscow that the West remains united and firmly anchored by Washington’s leadership.
