The Defected 27 members of the House of Assembly in Rivers State, along with the Pro-Wike lawmakers, are holding a session today at an undisclosed venue in Port Harcourt.
The lawmakers, who are accused of leaving the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), are led by their Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Chike Amaewhule. He stated that it has been 386 days since the unfortunate arson that destroyed the hallowed chamber of the House, yet no convictions have been made.
Rt. Hon. Amaewhule further noted that it has also been 341 days since Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara oversaw the demolition of the Assembly complex on December 13, 2023, with the knowledge and approval of the House.
He described these events as a troubling reminder of the brutal attacks on the legislature, which serves as a cornerstone of democracy. As a result, the House has resolved to designate October 29th each year as a solemn day to commemorate the egregious, scandalous, and malicious attacks on the Rivers State House of Assembly by Governor Fubara.
Additionally, the House has directed Julius Berger Plc to carry out repair work on the damaged section of the alternative route of the Port Harcourt Ring Road. During the discussion on the report from the House Committee on Works, members commended the committee for its thorough report and urged it to follow up on the necessary actions.
