The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced an indefinite nationwide industrial action.
The strike is scheduled to commence on August 10, 2026, citing the Federal Government’s failure to honour agreements previously reached with the association.
The decision followed growing frustration among resident doctors over what the association described as the government’s continued inability to address longstanding welfare issues and poor working conditions.
According to NARD, the strike became necessary after repeated engagements with the Federal Government failed to produce concrete action on critical demands, including the implementation of existing agreements and improvements in the welfare of resident doctors across the country.
The association stated that despite several assurances from the government, many of the unresolved issues have persisted, leaving its members with no option but to embark on an indefinite industrial action.
The planned strike is expected to disrupt healthcare services in federal and state-owned hospitals nationwide if no last-minute resolution is reached before the August 10 commencement date.
NARD urged the Federal Government to take immediate steps to fulfil its commitments and address the concerns of resident doctors in order to avert a prolonged shutdown of medical services across the country.
