The Executive Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Hon. Chief Charles Wobodo, has announced an immediate ban on all public gatherings across the council area following a surge in violent crimes and security threats.
The chairman condemned the recent wave of insecurity, including the killing of residents, motorcycle theft, attacks on farmers, kidnappings, and other criminal activities, describing the situation as a serious threat to peace and public safety in Ikwerre LGA.
Wobodo expressed concern over the recent killing of police officers in Aluu, the kidnapping of the OSPAC Commander in Ipo, the murder of a farmer in Isiokpo, and several attacks on road users and other residents. He said the incidents have created fear, trauma, and hardship for law-abiding citizens while disrupting economic and social activities across the area.
The council extended its condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones, assuring them of its sympathy during this difficult period.
As part of measures to address the worsening security situation, the council announced that all forms of public gatherings are prohibited within Ikwerre Local Government Area until further notice.
The chairman, however, stated that any individual, organisation, community, or group wishing to hold a public event must obtain written approval from the Executive Chairman at least 72 hours before the proposed gathering.
He warned that any gathering held without official approval would be deemed illegal, adding that security agencies have been directed to arrest and prosecute anyone found violating the directive in accordance with the law.
Wobodo said the decision was taken in the interest of protecting lives and property and restoring peace throughout the local government area.
He further assured residents that the council is working closely with security agencies to strengthen surveillance, track down those responsible for the recent attacks, and restore normalcy.
The chairman urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding while continuing their daily activities. He also appealed to members of the public to support security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could lead to the arrest of criminals, emphasizing that ensuring security is a collective responsibility.
