“Of Nyesom Wike, What’s good for the goose is indeed good for the gander”

By Obinna Ejianya (9News Nigeria – Melbourne, Australia)

The political panorama of Rivers State has been marred by bitter conflicts and power tussles in recent years. The succession battle between former governor Rotimi Amaechi and his protege, Nyesom Wike, set the stage for a tumultuous political climate that continues to unfold.

However, what goes around comes around, as Wike now finds himself facing disloyalty and opposition from his own successor, Amaopusenibo Siminalayi “Sim” Joseph Fubara.

Let us explore the dynamics and trajectory of the Rivers State political crisis, highlighting the themes of betrayal, greed, and power struggles that have left River State with egocentric greedy power mongers whose public interest is blatantly deficient in their agenda.

With the political landscape constantly shifting, it seems that what’s good for the goose is indeed good for the gander. The players may change, but the underlying power dynamics remain the same. As the battle for control and influence rages on, the people of Rivers State are left to navigate the complexities of a seemingly never-ending crisis.

Rotimi Amaechi, once a close ally of Wike, became embroiled in a bitter power struggle with his former political protégé. Amaechi’s tenure as governor was marked by controversy, with allegations of corruption and abuse of power. Despite these challenges, Amaechi managed to maintain a strong grip on the political landscape of Rivers State.

Nyesom Wike, on the other hand, rose to power and was determined to dismantle Amaechi’s political structure and establish his own authority. Wike’s tenure has been characterized by a fierce determination to consolidate his power, often at the expense of his rivals and peers alike.

The conflict between Amaechi and Wike reached its peak during the 2015 general elections. Amaechi, who had defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), threw his support behind the presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari, while Wike, a then covenanted People’s Democratic Party (PDP) party loyalist and die-hard, aligned himself with the party. This further deepened the divide between the two political figures and set the stage for a bitter power struggle at the expense and the decimation of Riverians.

This ongoing feud has now extended to the current governor, Sim Fubara, who finds himself entangled in the power struggle between these political heavyweights. The saying “what is good for the goose is good for the gander” seems particularly fitting in this situation, as Wike is now experiencing the consequences of the tactics he once employed against Amaechi. Let’s delve into the intricate web of political conflicts and ambitions that have shaped the landscape of Rivers State.

Betrayal and Power Play: Amaechi vs. Wike

The seeds of the current political crisis were sown during the power struggle between Rotimi Amaechi and Nyesom Wike. Amaechi, the former governor, initially supported Wike’s rise to power, appointing him as Chief of Staff and later nominated him as a minister. However, their friendship deteriorated when Amaechi began to favor another protege, Dakuku Peterside, as his successor. This move created deep-rooted fissures within their alliance, leading to a bitter fallout between Amaechi and Wike.

Wike, feeling betrayed by Amaechi’s support for Peterside, embarked on a mission to undermine him politically. He accused Amaechi of attempting to dislodge him from the state and neutralize his political ascendancy. This rift between the two political heavyweights set the stage for a fierce battle that continues to shape the political landscape of Rivers State.

Wike’s Greediness and Selfishness: From PDP to APC

In a surprising turn of events, Nyesom Wike, known for his affiliation with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) for his personal interest. This move further fueled the political conflict in Rivers State, as Wike’s allegiance shifted and he began to sabotage the interests of his former party, the PDP. His decision to join the APC was seen by many as a calculated move to consolidate his power and control over the state.

However, Wike’s greediness and selfishness have not gone unnoticed. His attempt to control Governor Fubara, a strong member of the PDP, despite his own defection to the APC, is seen as a betrayal to the party’s interests. The PDP views Wike as a strong opposition to their cause, and his actions have further intensified the political crisis in the state.

Fubara’s Independence and the Battle for Control

Sim Fubara, the current governor of Rivers State, represents a new era of independence and autonomy in the state’s politics. Unlike his predecessors, Fubara is determined to govern independently and serve the people of Rivers State without being controlled by Wike’s political influence. This has sparked a fierce battle for control between Wike and Fubara, as Wike refuses to relinquish his hold on the state’s political structure.

Fubara’s refusal to bow down to Wike’s demands and his commitment to doing what is right for the people of Rivers State have made him a target of Wike’s wrath. The battle between the two political heavyweights has divided the state and created a tense political climate that threatens the stability and progress of Rivers State.

The fallout between Wike and Fubara has had far-reaching consequences for the governance of Rivers State. Wike, who once accused Amaechi of attempting to undermine him politically, now finds himself in a similar position. He is facing opposition from a governor who refuses to succumb to his control and is determined to serve the interests of the people rather than Wike’s personal agenda. This turn of events has exposed Wike’s own hypocrisy and the dangers of his power-hungry approach to politics.
