WHY I RETURNED TO APC – SHEHU SANI
Shehu Sani, the former senator for Kaduna Central, has rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC) after a notable absence from the party.
This decision marks a significant shift in Sani’s political journey, which has seen him transition from the APC to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and back again.During an interview on Channels Television’s “Hard Copy” on Friday, Sani explained the motivations behind his return to the APC. The human rights activist originally left the party in October 2018 due to frustrations surrounding the party’s primary elections.
Following his exit, he joined the PDP, where he secured a senatorial ticket but ultimately lost to the current governor of Kaduna, Uba Sani, in the 2019 elections.Sani officially rejoined the APC on February 16, alongside several members from both the PDP and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kaduna. He emphasized that his return was not a whimsical decision but rather a product of careful consideration and reconciliation efforts initiated by the new governor.
“The political landscape has changed,” Sani remarked during the interview, reflecting on the circumstances that prompted his departure from the APC in the first place.
He noted that his previous fallout with former governor Nasir El-Rufai was rooted in both personal and political differences, which ultimately led to his exit from the party he helped establish in the region.“A circumstance led to our mass exit from the APC sometime in 2018, and that circumstance has changed,” he stated, highlighting the new political dynamics under the current administration.
Sani reiterated his foundational role in the APC, detailing how he and fellow party members laid the groundwork that contributed to the party’s success in the 2015 elections.
The senator expressed optimism about the future of the APC in Kaduna under the leadership of the new governor, who he described as proactive in fostering unity and collaboration within the party. “We have a new governor who reached out to us, making consultations and building bridges across the state,” Sani explained. This outreach, he believes, was crucial in facilitating his return to the party. As political climates continue to shift in Nigeria, Sani’s rejoining the APC could signal a broader trend of realignment among political figures seeking stability and influence.
The former lawmaker’s experience and connections within the APC may prove beneficial as he navigates this new chapter in his political career. With his return, Sani aims to contribute positively to the party’s agenda onin Kaduna, reflecting a commitment to the ideals he initially championed.
As the political landscape evolves, his actions will undoubtedly be closely monitored by both supporters and critics alike.
