ENUGU, Enugu State — Preparations are underway for the South-East Women Mega Empowerment Programme scheduled to hold on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at Okpara Square, Enugu, with the National Coordinating Team expected to drive mobilisation and coordination across the region.
The programme is being promoted as a regional initiative focused on women’s empowerment, leadership development and expanding opportunities for women across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.
An announcement introducing members of the National Coordinating Team described them as united in purpose and committed to advancing women’s participation in leadership and development, under the theme, “One Region, Stronger Women! A Greater Nigeria!”
The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at Okpara Square, one of Enugu’s major public gathering venues.
The programme builds on earlier preparations by South-East women of the All Progressives Congress (APC), whose National Coordinating Committee was inaugurated ahead of a regional mega rally and empowerment programme initially announced for August 18, 2026.
Previous reports identified the APC South-East Zonal Women Leader, Dr Oby Ajih, as the convener of the initiative, with Senator Uche Ekwunife and other political and organisational representatives among the committee members. The earlier programme was designed to bring together women from the five South-East states for economic empowerment, leadership development and political engagement.
The organisers had also outlined proposed interventions, including grants and start-up support for traders, farmers and small businesses, skills acquisition assistance, healthcare outreach and capacity-building opportunities to strengthen women’s participation in public life.
However, the latest announcement provided for this report does not specify the beneficiaries, funding arrangements, grant amounts or the precise activities scheduled for Thursday. It is therefore unclear from the available information which of the previously announced interventions will be implemented at the event.
Beyond the political gathering, the programme raises broader questions about how regional empowerment initiatives can translate into measurable improvements in women’s economic independence, access to skills, representation in decision-making and participation in enterprise development.
The South-East comprises five states with diverse economic and social needs. A successful regional empowerment initiative would therefore depend not only on attendance and mobilisation but also on transparent beneficiary selection, clearly defined support packages and verifiable outcomes after the event.
With the National Coordinating Team taking a central role in the programme, attention will be on the level of participation from the five states, the specific opportunities made available to women and the arrangements for sustaining any support beyond the gathering.
The organisers have called for unity of purpose around women’s empowerment, leadership and greater opportunities across the South-East, presenting the programme as part of a broader vision for a stronger region and a greater Nigeria.
