President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately vacate the court order freezing the Osun State Government’s bank accounts.
In a State House statement issued on Thursday, the President said he was embarrassed by the timing of the EFCC’s action, although he acknowledged that the agency acted within its legal powers by obtaining the court order on August 5, 2026.
Tinubu said he has consistently allowed anti-corruption agencies to perform their duties independently, without fear, favour or political interference.
He noted that actions taken by federal institutions are often credited to him, even when he has no prior knowledge of them.
The President said he had not been fully briefed on the reasons behind the freezing of the Osun Government’s accounts.
However, he described the timing as unfortunate because the state is only days away from its governorship election.
Tinubu stressed that nothing should create the impression that the EFCC or any federal agency is being used to influence the electoral process.
He said protecting public confidence in the credibility, fairness and integrity of Nigeria’s democracy made it necessary for him to intervene.
The President therefore directed the EFCC to return to court immediately, withdraw the freezing order and discontinue the action against the Osun State Government.
