President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere- Ekun as the new Chief Justice if Nigeria, CJN, in an acting capacity.
The ceremony took place at the State House in Abuja, making her the second female to hold this prestigious position after Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, who served between 2012 -2014.
Justice Kekere -Ekun’s appointment follows the retirement of Justice Olukoyade Ariwoola and her recommendation by the National Judicial Council. Her formal confirmation by the Senate is pending.
Among notable figure at the event were other Supreme Court Justices, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and various key government officials.
Born on May 7, 1958, in London, Justice Kekere-Ekun hails from a prominent Lagos family.
After completing her Primary and Secondary education, she pursued a Law degree at the University of Lagos, followed by further studies at the Nigerian Law School and Master’s degree from the London School of Economics.
Her legal career began in 1989 as a Senior Magistrate in Lagos, progressing to her appointment as a High Court Judge in 1996 and later as a Court of Appeal Justice in 2004.
In 2013, she became a Justice of the Supreme Court, distinguishing herself as the fifth and youngest female to hold that position.
Justice Kekere-Ekun is a member of several judicial committees and has held significant leadership roles, including as Chairman of the Robbery and Forearms Tribunal.
She has been honored as a Life Bencher by the Body of Benchers since 2018.
Justice Kekere- Ekun is married to Mr Akin Kekere-Ekun, and they are blessed with three children.
