A member of the US Congress, Danny Davis, has written to President Bola Tinubu, urging the Nigerian government to establish a consulate in Chicago, Illinois, to serve the needs of Nigerians residing in the Midwest states.

Davis argued that the initiative would benefit both Nigeria and the US, particularly Chicago, by boosting trade, investment, and cultural exchange between both nations.

He emphasised that Chicago’s strategic location would make it easier for Nigerians in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa to access essential consular services without traveling long distances.

The congressman, who represents Illinois’ 7th District, wrote the letter following discussions with the Nigeria Diaspora Initiative on the importance of setting up a consulate in Chicago.

He also pledged his support in making the office a reality.

In the letter, dated March 17, 2025, and seen by our correspondent on Thursday, Davis stated, “As a Member of Congress representing the 7th District of Illinois, I fully support this initiative, as it would be highly beneficial for both Nigeria and the City of Chicago.

“Nigeria holds a prominent position on the African continent, both economically and culturally, and has deep-rooted ties with the United States. Establishing a consulate in Chicago would strengthen these bonds, enhance diplomatic relations, and create new opportunities for trade, investment, and cultural exchange.

“Moreover, it would provide much-needed consular services to Nigerians residing in Chicago and neighboring states such as Wisconsin, Indiana, and Iowa. Given the size and influence of the Nigerian diaspora in the Midwest, I believe this initiative is long overdue.

Speaking on behalf of the NDI and other Nigerian advocates, the General Coordinator, Tunji Quadri, emphasised Chicago’s strategic importance due to its accessibility and vibrant international trade and tourism sectors.

Quadri, a US-based cybersecurity expert, noted that a Nigerian consulate in Chicago would provide essential resources for Nigerians in the Midwest and enhance business, tourism and investment opportunities.

He stressed that easier access to passport and visa services, document certification, and consular assistance would boost business relations between Nigeria and the US while also reducing unemployment in Nigeria.

Similarly, a Clinical Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois Chicago, Shaffideen Amuwo, said their push for a consulate was driven by their love for Nigeria.

Amuwo added that once established, the consulate would help the Nigerian embassy function more effectively.

“I urge your administration to prioritize this effort and take the necessary steps to make it a reality. I look forward to further discussions and stand ready to assist in any way possible.”

Also speaking, aviation industry expert Tolani Banire, noted that the new office would strengthen the Nigerian government’s presence abroad and improve citizen-government engagement.

Banire stated, “The establishment of a Nigerian consulate plays a crucial role in enhancing diplomatic and consular services for Nigerians abroad.

“It provides essential services such as passport renewal, visa applications, legal assistance, and citizenship-related matters. This ensures Nigerians can access these services without needing to return home while reinforcing their connection to their homeland.”
