The much-anticipated peace meeting convened by Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, failed to be held on Monday after lawmakers refused to attend.
Governor Fubara, through a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, invited Speaker Martins Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers to a reconciliation meeting at Government House, Port Harcourt.
The invitation, dated March 7, followed the governor’s receipt of the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgment on the political crisis in the state.
The meeting’s agenda included presentation of the 2025 budget to the Assembly, payment of lawmakers’ allowances, allocation of a venue for legislative sittings.
However, the meeting scheduled for 10 AM did not take place as lawmakers failed to show up.
A video circulating on social media shows Hon. Lolo Isaiah Opuende, representing Akuku-Toru Constituency II, confirming that they would not honor the invitation.
“How can you write a letter and post it on social media and expect us to come? No, we are not kids. The governor should write to the Assembly in a proper way,” he said.
Some lawmakers also claimed the government was not fully prepared for the meeting, questioning why the governor scheduled it at the same time as a project commissioning.
