Meta is set to introduce another major change to Whatsapp Business pricing, with businesses using the WhatsApp Business API and Cloud API expected to start paying for customer service messages that have traditionally been free.

The new pricing takes effect on October 1, 2026, and is expected to have a wide impact on businesses that rely on WhatsApp for customers support, sales and automated communication.

Under the current system, businesses can respond to customers without paying for service messages within 24-hour customer service service window after a customer initiates a conversation. From October 1, however, Meta will begin charging businesses on per-message basis for these service messages.

The development is part of a broader change in WhatsAPP’s business pricing pricing structure that began in 2025. On July, 2025, Whatsapp moved its Business API pricing.from a conversation-based system to per-message model for template messages, including marketing, utility and authentication messages.

Meta has also introduced charges for responses generated by its Meta Business Agent, Its AI-powered business messaging service. The charges, which began on August 1, 2026, are based on the number of tokens processed.

The latest changes particularly important for businesses using WhatsApp through customer relationship management systems, chat bots, automated customer-service platforms and other developer integrations. Companies that handle large volumes of customer conversions could see their messaging costs rise once the new charges take effect.

However, the development does not mean ordinary WhatsApp users will begin paying to send messages. Regular consumer WhatsApp remains free, while the free WhatsApp Business App is separate from API-based system affected by the new pricing.

The change means businesses that depend heavily on WhatsApp for customer service and sales may need to review their messaging strategies and budgets ahead of October.

In simple terms, WhatsApp is not becoming a paid service for everyone. instead, Meta is expanding its per-message charging system for businesses using its API, with service messages becoming chargeable from October 1, 2026.
