The 2027 battle for the Imo East Senatorial District may be entering a more competitive phase as the campaign of the Action Peoples Party (APP) candidate, Dr Chima Matthew Amadi, continues to attract attention across communities in Owerri Zone.

Amadi, popularly known as Mazi Gburugburu, recently visited Umuoma Nekede in Owerri West Local Government Area, where he received a royal blessing from the traditional ruler of the community, HRH Eze Morrison Eke, PhD.

The visit was part of Amadi’s ongoing grassroots engagement cum rural empowerment across the nine local government areas that make up Imo East Senatorial District, otherwise known as Owerri Zone. The district comprises Aboh Mbaise, Ahiazu Mbaise, Ezinihitte Mbaise, Ikeduru, Mbaitoli, Ngor Okpala, Owerri Municipal, Owerri North and Owerri West.

Amadi’s engagement in Umuoma Nekede was also aimed at appreciating the community’s women association, led by Mrs Maureen Uka, with members of his campaign team and political allies accompanying him.

The delegation was led by his Campaign Director-General, Hon. Chief Henry Onwukwe, and included Chief Ezenwa Nwagu, Engr. Emeka Onwukwe of the APP State Secretariat, Dr Barr. Uche Nwosu, APP Legal Adviser, Mr Ndidi Onyemachi, Imo Women Director, Dr White Iheagwam, Amb. Steve Nnadi, APP State Publicity Secretary, Mr Uzoma Mboma, Chief Ugochukwu Duru, an APP House of Assembly candidate, Hon. Clifford Ahugha, Comrade Isidore Chukwuemeka, APP State Youth Leader, Comrade Obioma Onwuchekwa, Imo State Coordinator, and Hon. Mrs May Obiyor, APP Assistant Woman Leader.

The growing visibility of Amadi’s campaign is coming against the backdrop of his emergence as the APP’s consensus candidate for the Imo East Senate race. The party adopted him during its May 2026 senatorial primary, in an exercise reported to have been monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

.

His candidacy has subsequently generated increased political activity, particularly because of his grassroots campaign strategy and his repeated emphasis on competence, character, accountability and issue-based representation.

At a recent campaign engagement, Amadi told fellow contestants that the Senate contest should be determined by ideas rather than violence, while promising to take the APP’s message to wards and communities across Owerri Zone. His campaign has focused on issues including poor roads, insecurity, unemployment, healthcare, education and the need for stronger representation at the National Assembly.

Political observers are now watching closely to see whether the candidate can convert his growing community engagements into a wider electoral coalition across the nine LGAs. The significance of that challenge cannot be understated, as Imo East stretches from the Owerri metropolis through Ngor Okpala, Ikeduru, Mbaitoli and the three Mbaise councils, making it a politically diverse constituency.

Supporters of Amadi argue that his background in governance advocacy, research, entrepreneurship and philanthropy gives him an advantage beyond conventional party politics. His public profile identifies him as a scholar and governance advocate, while reports have also documented his community-focused interventions and empowerment activities in different parts of Imo State.

The Nekede visit has therefore added another layer to what is shaping up to be a closely watched senatorial contest. While claims that Amadi has already overtaken other contenders remain political assertions that will ultimately be tested at the ballot box, the increasing visibility of his campaign is difficult to ignore.

For many voters in Owerri Zone, the emerging debate is no longer simply about political party affiliation. It is increasingly about the personality, record, competence and capacity of the individual seeking to represent the district in the Senate.

With the 2027 election still ahead, the real test for Amadi and every other aspirant will be whether their growing campaign crowds, endorsements and grassroots engagements can translate into sustained voter support across the nine local government areas of Imo East.
