In a bid to address noise pollution and environmental violations, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has taken decisive action by sealing several establishments, including churches, bars, event centers, and residential apartments. This article will delve into the reasons behind the sealing of prominent churches like the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Dominion City Church, shedding light on the measures taken by the Lagos State government to protect the environment.
Alongside RCCG and Dominion City Church, LASEPA sealed Red Bar, Farm City, The Odyssey Apartments, Acuma Event Centre, and Fortunes Shortlet Apartment. These establishments are located in various parts of Lekki Phase 1, Oniru Lekki, and Ajah, all within the Lagos Island axis. The sealing of these establishments was a result of their violation of the state’s environmental regulations, particularly in relation to noise pollution.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, took to Twitter to disclose the sealing of the establishments. According to Wahab, LASEPA’s actions were aimed at addressing instances of noise pollution and other environmental violations. The government agency is committed to restoring environmental order and sanity in the state, ensuring that residents can enjoy a peaceful and conducive environment.
The sealing of churches and religious centers is part of the broader efforts to curb noise pollution in Lagos State. Aside from RCCG and Dominion City Church, other places of worship affected include the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Sanctuary of Favour), Cherubim & Seraphim (Ayo ni), and Station of Relief Christ Ministry. These establishments were found to be contributing to noise pollution, thereby causing discomfort to residents in their vicinity.
The sealing of the Redeemed Church by LASEPA was prompted by a complaint from a concerned citizen. The individual, identified as Oreoluwa, reported the church to the agency over noise pollution. Oreoluwa expressed relief when LASEPA contacted her, promising to address the problem. This incident highlights the importance of public engagement and reporting in addressing environmental violations and ensuring the well-being of communities.
Noise pollution is a significant concern in densely populated areas like Lagos. It can have detrimental effects on physical and mental well-being, including hearing loss, sleep disturbances, increased stress levels, and reduced quality of life. Recognizing the importance of a peaceful environment for its residents, the Lagos State government has implemented measures to address this issue and ensure a better quality of life for its citizens.
The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) plays a crucial role in monitoring and regulating environmental activities within the state. It is responsible for enforcing environmental laws and regulations, including those related to noise pollution. LASEPA conducts regular inspections and takes necessary actions to mitigate any violations that may harm the environment or pose health risks to the public.
