Yobe Gets New Newspaper

Maidawa Arewa media, an online private newspaper has been launched in Yobe State.

The launching took place on Sunday in the state capital, Damaturu, to officially announced it’s presence in the state and country’s media industry.

However, Maidawa was established eight years ago and made its first online appearance in 2017.

According to Maidawa Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Wadzani Apagu, the launching is it’s official public appearance and a new beginning for the organization.

In his speech at the event, he said that lack of adequate and efficiency in the state’s media circle in reporting local and grassroot issues is among the motivating factors for the establishment of the platform, siting example with the famous December 1, 2014 Boko-Haram terrorists attack in Damaturu.

Stating further, Wadzani highlighted the importance of local media platforms, especially in reporting insurgency in the Northeast region, noting that indepth analysis and reporting of local issues helps the government, security forces and other development partners in responding to crisis.

Also at the event, the newspaper launch it’s five year development plan, a document that highlights it’s plans, areas of focus and programs for the period.

Mal Musa Usman, a lecture from Mass Communication Department, University of Maiduguri praise Maidawa initiative and advice the organization on professional best practices in the media business.

Usman, also the keynote speaker at the event, highlighted key areas of concern on the role of media in developing societies.

He noted that the media is a necessary tools in advancing meaningful development, especially in democratic societies, without which, he said, governments and other official bodies cannot be hold accountable for their actions and inactions.

Other speakers at the event also shower praises on Mr. Wadzani and his team for their courage and determination in contributing to the development of Yobe, the Northeast region and Nigeria at large.

Dignitaries at the event includes, the state governor, Alh. Mai Mala Buni, who was represented by the commissioner of Information and Culture, Abdullahi Bego.

Other guests are the executive secretary, Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), Dr. Mohammed Goje, chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Yobe State chapter, Comrade Mohammed Isma’il Rajab and Dauda Mohammed Gombe, North East Youth Initiative for Development among others.
