A former presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP), ALHAJI Tanko Yunusa has called on the National ASSEMBLY to make sure that the electoral act reforms get passed without futher delay of assent by the president.

This he said on an interview with the press on the politicial situation of the country.

The astute Politician however stated the key issue about NIGERIA’S politics, the electoral reform and the electoral umpire.

ALHAJI Tanko maintained that Nigeria need to have a Commission that will enforce rules and regulations, where anybody that violates electoral regulations will be arrested and dealt with.

He added that with this singular move Nigeria Government will reduce the burden of INEC.

In his words, ” How do you reconcile a situation where someone runs for an election in a politicial party and the next minute he/she jumps to another politicial party and INEC does not have the power to stop that person from running in the election? How do you justify people spending huge sums of money to contest an election? How do you Justify the nomination of a card carrying member of a politicial party as INEC Commissioner? These are very critical matters hampering the work of INEC”

While calling on the national assembly to allow a total independence of INEC, Tanko opined for an INEC whose money will be coming from the consolidated fund without any interference from the National ASSEMBLY.

This implies that Nigeria will enjoy an INEC that is unbundled in such a way that it will be responsible only for election, while other things like constituency delineation goes to the National Population Commission.

Meanwhile, ALHAJI Tanko applauded the present INEC Chairman, PROF YAKUBU MAHMOOD who he said has shown his good intentions to strengthen the Commission and give NIGERIANS the best but frowned at NIGERIA’S legal instruments which he said have hampered most of the people that found themselves as INEC Boss.

He had earlier suggested for a brand new constitution for the country to capture all AGITATIONS. The constitution he said needs a complete overhaul, a constitution that will be acceptable to every Nigerian. Then Nigeria can start the rebuilding process”

He futher criticized the issue of zoning of the PRESIDENTIAL position or rotation saying that that is not a good politics and cannot solve the problems of NIGERIANS.

He told the press that various zones are challenged by zonal familiarities like resource control, state police, industrialization, true federalism.

He believed the issue of zoning emanated as a result of lack of equity and fairness, no Justice, inflation, incompetence, no confidence in the system.

He finally advised Nigerian power wigs to leverage the issue of competence, electoral reforms, equity, youths empowerment and improving naira currency value as a panacea to solve 70% of our problems as a developing nation.
