As preparations intensify for the 2027 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has widened Nigeria’s political space with the new approval of two additional parties, the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), increasing the number of registered political parties in Nigeria to 21.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, announced the developers during the commission’s quarterly consultative meeting with political party leaders in Abuja on Thursday February 5, 2026, explaining that DLA met all constitutional and legal requirements, while NDC was registered in compliance with a Federal High Court order from Lokoja, Kogi State.
He disclosed that out of 171 associations that applied, only two scaled the final stage, and warned political parties to curb internal crisis and excessive litigations, stressing that unresolved disputes could threaten the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of future elections.
