The Commissioner for Works, Ralph Nwosu led His Excellency Distinguised Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Executive Governor of Imo State, the Deputy Governor, Prof. Placid Njoku and other senior political appointees of the Shared Prosperity Government for on the spot assessment of the Dumez Borrow-Pit situated in Umuokpara Etiti Mgbidi in Oru West Local Government Area.
This immediate inspection by the governor Uzodinma is a call in the right direction to order the commissioner of works to do the needful on this particular Mgbidi- Owerri -Onitsha road which has continued to disrupt both vehicular and human movements on daily basis.
Information revealed to 9News Nigeria confirmed the order to desilt the blocked drainage receiving Storm water from Akatta,Omuma, Otulu and other adjoining Communities to the Umuokpara Borrow-Pit, Etiti.
Inspecting the borrow pit, the Governor maintained that the silted underground drainage causing the overflowing of storm waters form neighboring Communities to the failed spot in Mgbidi-Oguta junction should be opened, as a temporary measure in other to give a permanent and lasting solution to the failed spot in Mgbidi-Oguta junction.
The Governor stated that a team of engineers will be deployed to the area for possible engineering design to tackle the lingering challenges facing the very spot adding that the problem will be solved as soon as possible.
He therefore enjoined the people of Mgbidi and Otulu to continue to be law abiding as the rehabilitation of the road is ongoing and stressed that his administration is determined to effectuate the rehabilitation Reconstruction and Recovery of Imo roads as government is desired to accord her people the maximum dividends of democracy in all areas of human and infrastructural development.
Speaking Eze Festus Orji (Obi of Otulu) and Eze Amatom Obinyere ( Eze Etiti Mgbidi Community) in their separate remarks eulogized the Governor for finding out time to visit them while assuring the Governor of their unalloyed support to his people oriented policies and programs for Imo people.
Speaking to newsmen, the Commissioner for Works, Ralph Nwosu assured the people of Umuokpara Community and Otulu where the borrow pit is domiciled that their problems will become a thing of the past and promised urgent rehabilitation of the road once the rains are over even though the road should be a federal concern but must be done to alleviate the sufferings of our people, he added.
It is therefore worthy to note that the Dumez Borrow-Pit came into existence in 1962 when the Dumez Construction company constructed the first one lane in Owerri-Onitsha road before the dualization and reconstruction of the road by Julius Berger and subsequent expansion of the borrow pit with drainage channelization of storm waters from Akatta, Otulu, Omuma and other adjoining Communities and it’s environs into the borrow pit.
Meanwhile the silting of the underground drainage system that connects to the borrow pit, all the storm waters from the above mentioned areas move down to the lowest point at Mgbidi-Oguta junction thereby compromising the road structure and making rehabilitation almost impossible.
But the people are optimistic by the visit of the peoples governor Hope Uzodinma, Imo will surely smile again hence the problem of Mgbidi-Oguta junction along owerri onitsha road is discovered and hopefully ndi Imo will be expecting its commencement of work without delay.
