The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, who was found dead in a hotel room in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died on Monday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Moscow area of Ekpoma.
The circumstances surrounding his death have raised questions, with police arresting the hotel owner, manager, and the the 21-year-old woman who reportedly with him shortly before he died.
Confirming the incident, the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the police received a report at about 8 p.m. on Monday that the lecturer had lodged in the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
According to Ikoedem, Uwuigbe later asked the woman to leave the room to buy water for him, but upon her return, she found him lying lifeless and raised an alarm.
“The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police”, the PPRO stated.
She added that the arrests were made to establish what transpired before the lecturer’s death, noting that investigation is ongoing.
The deceased’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary for preservation pending the outcome of the police investigation.
