The Super Eagles of Nigeria today moved a step closer in their aim to qualify for next year’s FIFA World Cup competition in Russia. In a qualifying game against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at Yaounde, the Nigerian team fought for a well-deserved 1-1 draw and increased their chances of qualification for the mundial.
Nigeria’s impressive winger, Moses Simon opened the scoring in the 30th minutes to register his first goal for the senior team and give the Super Eagles the deserved lead. The tension on the field suddenly increased as the Cameroonian fans started booing their team by half time. This act by the impatient Cameroon fans was very understandable as they expected more from their team who lost scandalously 4-0 to the Super Eagles at Uyo, Nigeria last week Friday.
After much pressure, the Indomitable Lions got their breakthrough when they were awarded a controversial penalty by referee Bakary Gassama as striker Vincent Aboubakar converted the spot kick.
With the draw, the Super Eagles now sit comfortably on 10 points after four games, followed by their Zambian counterpart who are second with 4 points after three games. Cameroon and Algeria, the other two teams in the group have 3 points and 1 point respectively.
