P-Square: The Forbes rated group that couldn’t keep it together

Music groups are usually known to take bits out of each other.

Being in a music group could be quite tricky, because when you grow up together with someone or people, at some point, it might get rough as everyone wants to be the boss of his escapades.

Throughout history, many bands or groups have disbanded or separated due to numerous factors and sometimes not necessarily problems.

Nevertheless, some groups never learn their lesson and keep reuniting even after it’s obvious that the members probably shouldn’t be allowed in the same room together.

Also, there are many cases where a member of a music group left the group and the group still functioned.

It could be pertinent to emphasize that even if teams or groups are essential, not all duos were built to last.

P-Square

This Nigerian music duo was composed of twin brothers Peter Okoye and Paul Okoye.

They were a music group noted for their artistic reinvention, musical versatility and standard visual style.

This duo were widely regarded as one of the most influential African acts of all time and one of the most successful music groups from Africa.

Launched into mainstream recognition in 2003, P-Square went ahead to be awarded Artistes of the Decade at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2015.

They also appeared on the Forbes Lists of the 40 most powerful celebrities in Africa.

However, this successful African group went sour when they disbanded in 2017 due to an alleged lopsidedness in individual input of songs as Paul was getting a bigger share of their joint albums.

This eventually led to a split with their both lawyers dividing the fortunes which they were both involved in as joint ventures.

The incident then birthed a solo journey for both artists, with Peter now being Mr P and Paul, Rudeboy.

In an amazing turn of events, the two brothers ultimately reconciled publicly on 17 November 2021, when they both hugged and shook hands at Peter Okoye’s home in Lagos.

Most recently, it seems that this bromance have turned sour again as Rudeboy announced their split on 1 August, 2024, insisting that “it wasn’t working”.

Meanwhile, Mr. P has broken the silence today, speaking on his own part, debunking most of his brothers’ claims.

According to an open letter he penned down to his twin brother, Peter Okoye emphasized that he has been disrespected and belittled.

“I often find myself wondering, what do you truly gain by constantly disrespecting and belittling me all the time. You have disrespected my wife, disrespected my family, disrespected my talent, disrespected my ideas, and even sided with Jude when he was clearly trying to oppress me.

“Now, it feels like you have taken it even further by trying so hard to turn the fans against me by making them believe I’m jealous of you.

“You have been doing everything for the fans to hate me, but guess what? They will never hate me; instead, they will hate us both because we have disappointed and failed them.

“I hope you are happy now. I genuinely wish you nothing but the best, bro!”. The letter read in part.

Following their previous split, it was clear that their elder brother and former manager, Jude Okoye picked sides with Paul.

The duo’s separation has always been encompassed around constant disagreements and irreconcilable differences.
