Nigerian Nobel Laureate and renowned playwright, Professor Wole Soyinka, has openly declared his stance on religion, stating his skepticism towards the Islamic and Christian conception of God.

In a recent interview, Soyinka remarked, “I don’t believe in the Islamic or Christian God, and If that makes me an atheist, then I am an atheist”, sparking widespread conversations across Nigeria’s religious and social circles.

Soyinka’s views reflect his long-standing philosophical approach, which prioritizes personal inquiry over adherence religious dogma.

Despite growing up in a Christian household, he has continiously critiqued institutionalized religion, particularly its role in fostering division and violence.

He advocates for individual freedom in matters of faith, encouraging people to think Independently about spirituality.

While his comments has stirred controversy in Nigeria, where religion plays a central role in daily life, Soyinka remains steadfast in his belief in a more humanistic, free thinking approach to spiritual and existential questions.

His statement has reignited debates on faith, belief, and personal liberty in the country.
