Ambassador Emmanuel David Atseyinku, 9News Nigeria Chief – Bureau in charge of South-South Nigeria, known as “Amb Emmalex,” has raised serious concerns regarding the role of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Nigeria, particularly in the political unrest in Rivers State. His questioning of whether IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun is acting as a politician highlights the troubling intersection of law enforcement and political affairs in the region.
Emmalex emphasized the inappropriate involvement of police in political matters, stating it is unacceptable for a senior officer like the IGP to engage in such activities. He pointed out that the police actions in Rivers State have often been justified as orders from the IGP, which raises questions about the integrity and independence of the police force.
On November 4, 2024, reports surfaced of police officers storming the Ikwerre Local Government Council Secretariat, equipped with multiple Hilux vehicles and using teargas on council staff. This incident allegedly occurred without proper authorization from the state Commissioner of Police or the governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.
Emmalex criticized the IGP for not following appropriate channels of communication before taking such drastic actions.
He called into question the motivations behind the IGP’s involvement, suggesting that it undermines the police’s role and could be seen as politically motivated.
Amb Emmalex warned that such actions could damage Nigeria’s reputation both domestically and internationally, as they do not reflect the values of a country striving for democratic governance.
In light of these events, he urged the public and authorities to scrutinize the role of the IGP in political matters and to ensure that law enforcement remains impartial and focused on maintaining order, rather than becoming entangled in political disputes.
