As part of his ongoing efforts to promote grassroots development and economic self-reliance, the member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa, on Tuesday, July 15th, empowered over 200 widows and women through vocational training in hairdressing, soap making, and makeup artistry.

The empowerment program, which drew participants from all 22 wards of the constituency, not only equipped the women with practical skills but also provided them with start-up kits and financial support to launch their own small-scale businesses. All beneficiaries received certificates of participation upon completion of the training.

The initiative is a testament to Hon. Osonwa’s unwavering commitment to improving the lives of widows and vulnerable women in his constituency by providing sustainable means of livelihood.

Expressing their gratitude, several beneficiaries shared how the program had positively impacted them. Nwoko Oyidiya Ama from Arochukwu said, “I’ve been longing for an opportunity like this. Hon. Ibe came through. May God bless him.”

Another participant, Mrs. Mercy Chikezie from Isu, who was part of the makeup class, said, “I learnt so much. I’m truly grateful to Hon. Ibe for this opportunity. It’s very motivating.”

Mrs. Nneoma Mba Idika, a hairdresser, also appreciated the support: “I thank Hon. Ibe for this hairdryer. It will go a long way in boosting my business. May God bless him.”

Speaking at the event, one of the facilitators, Elder Uga Kalu, encouraged the women to utilize their skills, likening it to the biblical parable of talents. “If you are empowered and don’t use it, it’s like hiding your talent,” he warned.

This empowerment scheme underscores Hon. Osonwa’s vision of inclusive representation and his drive to uplift and economically strengthen the women of Arochukwu/Ohafia.

Reacting to the empowerment program, Rep Osonwa said: “I’ve seen the conversations around the recent empowerment for women and widows, and I want to thank everyone who has taken an interest. It shows that people care, and that they expect empowerment to be real, practical, and meaningful. I agree with that completely.

“Let me take a moment to clarify a few things: What we shared recently was not just equipment. It was the result of structured, hands-on training in soap-making, hairdressing, and makeup artistry. The soap-making kits were packaged in buckets for easy handling and to keep the contents safe. Other beneficiaries received full salon dryers and professional makeup kits. Most importantly, every participant was trained to use what they received to build a source of income.

“This is not a one-time effort. It is part of a broader, long-term initiative to empower 5,000 women and young people in our constituency.

“We started in October 2024 with training for farmers and small business owners, delivered in partnership with experts from the agricultural sector. Many participants received startup grants, with some receiving as much as ₦500,000 to support their work.

“In March 2025, we expanded into ICT and education. We distributed laptops, supported digital learning in schools, and helped students prepare for JAMB through scholarships and registration support.

“Now, in July 2025, our focus is on vocational training. For many families, access to practical skills like soap-making or hairdressing can be the difference between dependency and self-reliance. Not every form of empowerment needs to be flashy. What matters is that it works.

“Importantly, this program has reached all 22 wards across the eight clans in Arochukwu/Ohafia. Our goal is to carry everyone along. No ward has been left behind, and no community has been overlooked. Empowerment must be inclusive if it is to be meaningful.

“Empowerment comes in different forms. The goal is to help people take the next step toward independence.

“We are not doing this for show. We are focused on real people and real outcomes. That work continues.

“To the women who are already applying their new skills and starting something of their own, I see you and I am proud of you. We will keep working, keep listening, and keep showing up.”
