After many hours of rigorous hunting, a hippopotamus met its death in River Niger, Jebba, Niger state, yesterday.
The hunt for it allegedly started in the early hours of Wednesday and was killed at about 4pm on Thursday, after six gunshots and numerous arrows.
It was said to have been killed to avert tragedy in the area. Four local boats were destroyed in the process.
Residents, youths and the hunters were not left out in sharing the remains of the Hippopotamus which some exclaimed would make sumptuous meals, the report had said.
A few reactions trailed the killing of the animal while some were in support, others simply felt that some Nigerians are “backward and still too “primitive” to understand reasons why the Hippopotamus should either have been captured and taken to the zoo, or simply driven back into the wild or wherever it may have come from
The big question remains unanswered, is there any form of anti-poaching law existing as part of our laws?
