Dele Momodu has explained why former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was appointed Deputy Chairman of Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 presidential campaign committee despite being in detention.
Momodu, a member of the media and communications team of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) campaign, said the appointment was partly aimed at recognizing El-Rufai’s political contributions and sacrifice.
He spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief programme on Friday.
Atiku had announced the campaign structure on Thursday, naming Kashim Ibrahim-Imam as Chairman and El-Rufai as his deputy.
According to Momodu, El-Rufai remains an influential political figure in Northern Nigeria and his appointment reflects the role he has played in the country’s political developments.
Momodu also described El-Rufai as a “prisoner of conscience”, while alleging that his decision was politically motivated.
He further claimed that El-Rufai contributed to the political efforts that helped produce the current administration following the 2023 presidential election.
Momodu said El-Rufai had the option of remaining outside the country but chose to return to Nigeria despite being aware of the possibility of arrest.
“He knew he would be arrested, and he was arrested”, Momodu said.
