Abia State Police Command has announced that a 35-year-old woman, Nwoko Gift, from Imo State, will be arraigned in court for attempted murder as she was allegedly caught threatening her 12-year-old niece with kitchen knife in Umuahia.
The suspect, who lives at IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia, was arrested following a disturbing incident that was captured on video, showing her allegedly assaulting the young girl while wielding a knife.
Confirming the incident in a press statement dated July 6, 2026, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the police said operatives attached to the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters responded swiftly after receiving intelligence on the incident, rescued the victim, arrested the suspect and recovered the kitchen knife allegedly used in the attack.
According to the police, Mrs. Nwoko allegedly attempted to kill Miss Ebo Chimamanda, her 12-year-old niece who lives with her, after the child reportedly failed to spread clothes as instructed before the suspect left for the market.
