The Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA) on Tuesday screened Chief Longers Anyanwu following his nomination by Governor Hope Uzodinma for appointment as a commissioner in the Imo State Executive Council.
The screening exercise, conducted at the Assembly Complex in Owerri, formed part of the constitutional process required before the nominee can be confirmed by the legislature. During the exercise, lawmakers examined his credentials, public service experience, vision for governance and preparedness to contribute to the administration’s development agenda.
Chief Longers Anyanwu is a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State with years of involvement in grassroots political mobilization and public service. He previously served as the Imo State Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), where he coordinated the implementation of federal social intervention initiatives in the state.
In recent political engagements, Anyanwu emerged as one of the notable advocates of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s Charter of Equity, consistently canvassing support for equity, fairness and political inclusion in Imo State. He also declared his intention to contest the Okigwe Senatorial seat in the 2027 general election, reaffirming his commitment to the APC and expressing confidence in the party’s continued dominance in the state.
His nomination for commissioner is therefore seen as a significant development in his political career, marking a transition from party mobilization and political advocacy to executive governance. Although the ministry he may oversee has not yet been announced, political stakeholders believe his experience within the APC and public administration could be deployed to strengthen policy implementation.
The screening of Chief Longers Anyanwu signals another phase in Governor Hope Uzodimma’s efforts to strengthen his cabinet with individuals who possess both political experience and administrative capacity. The nomination also underscores the governor’s continuing strategy of rewarding loyal party members while assembling a team expected to drive the administration’s second-term agenda.
Beyond the politics of appointment, Anyanwu’s emergence may influence the political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in Okigwe Zone, where he has remained politically active. His elevation into the executive arm, if confirmed, could further consolidate the APC’s grassroots structure while enhancing collaboration between government and party stakeholders.
Ultimately, the success of the nomination will be measured not by political pedigree alone but by the nominee’s ability to deliver impactful policies, improve service delivery and justify the confidence reposed in him by the governor and the people of Imo State.
The House of Assembly is expected to conclude its constitutional process and communicate its decision to Governor Hope Uzodinma in the coming days.
