The Government of Adamawa has announced plans to procure 31 buses in addition to ten already procured as part of palliatives to cushion the hardship visited on residents of the state following the removal of subsidy on petrol.
Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, governor of the state made the announcement on Thursday during a meeting with an 18-member house of assembly ad-hoc committee on palliative.
He told the committee that a workable and sustainable transport system is needed in the state even without the hardship occasioned by the removal of the fuel subsidy.
The ten buses earlier procured by the government were procured from Innoson Motors, a Nigerian automobile company.
The governor who also implied that his government will equally patronize Innoson Motors for the remaining 33 buses, said the decision is necessary in order to support indigenous industries to also grow.
‘This approach will not only boosts the economy but also ensures the availability of transportation services, which is essential for economic growth,’ the governor said.
With the plan, the government will be having 41 buses in total to cushion the hardship and mainstream transport system in the state.
Humwashi Wonosikou, spokesman of the governor who disclosed this in a statement, said the governor similarly revealed other developmental plans of his administration for the state.
Some of the projects he planned to achieve, he said, includes construction and establishment of child and mother care hospital in Yola, 21 model creche primary and junior secondary schools and three model senior secondary schools across the senatorial zones.
‘He also mentioned the upcoming construction projects, such as the Mubi Roundabout flyover and the Super Highway from Welcome to Yola to AA Lawan Junction,’ the statement by Wonosikou, said.
In his response, Mr. Victor Akpor Egene, the chairman of the ad-hoc committee, commended the governor’s administration for its infrastructural projects, particularly the roads in the state capital.
He appreciated the government’s decision to patronize Innoson Motors, encouraging other governments to follow suit for the overall development of the country’s economy.
He also condoled the governor over the recent incidents of boat mishaps that occurred in the state few weeks ago.
However, on the boat accidents, Mr. Egene emphasized the urgent need for the country to design and implement a comprehensive scheme that would enhance the safety of waterways for the people.
