The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) over an inflammatory statement circulating on social media and allegedly attributed to him.
Akpabio called on the DSS to conduct a thorough investigation to identify those behind the creation and circulation of the statement, which he described as an attempt to mislead the public and create division among Nigerians.
In the petition, the Senate President’s office denied that Akpabio ever made the controversial remarks concerning Northern Nigerians.
His office maintained that there was no speech, video, audio recording, interview or credible report to support the claim that the Senate President made the statement being circulated online.
The statement was allegedly fabricated and circulated to create confusion, provoke tension and fuel division among Nigerians, particularly at a time when political activities are gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio therefore urged the DSS to immediately investigate the origin of the statement and uncover those responsible for its creation and circulation.
The development has generated reactions on social media, with renewed concerns over the spread of false information and statements falsely attributed to prominent political figures.
