The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, has openly declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Speaking during an interview with journalists at a legislative training workshop organized in Abuja by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) for members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, the Speaker praised President Tinubu’s leadership and developmental strides.
“All of us have said Tinubu is doing very well, and we are going to support Tinubu for his second term.
“This second term is just for the South. The Northerners have got their eight years, so the South must also have theirs.” Otong stated.
The Speaker, who represents Abak State Constituency in the 8th Assembly, clarified recent political speculations regarding the stance of the Akwa Ibom State Governor.
He noted that the governor’s support for the President is not an indication of defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), but rather a personal endorsement based on performance.
“He’s not saying he’s defecting to the APC. He’s saying he’s supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu because of his good works. And he said it’s personal, if you listened very well,” the Speaker explained.
Otong also highlighted President Tinubu’s economic impact on state governance, commending the federal government’s ability to empower governors financially without excessive borrowing.
“As the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State, there’s no time the governor has brought any loan facility request for us to approve for him.
“That means the President is doing very well by making sure that the governors have a lot of money to manage the state. And that’s why you see peace everywhere,” he noted.
