A fresh wave of political tension is brewing in Rivers State as loyalists of former Governor Nyesom Wike boycotted the interdenominational church service held on Sunday to mark the commencement of activities for Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary in Port Harcourt.
Those absent from the service included members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, elected local government chairmen, and political appointees installed by the former Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.).
Despite the boycott, His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, was present at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul’s, Port Harcourt, where he graced the interdenominational service held in commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.
The event, organised by the state government, is part of a series of programmes designed to celebrate the milestone and foster unity across political and religious lines.
According to a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Special Service Bureau, Sir Dede Friday, the Independence Day celebrations will continue with a parade scheduled for Wednesday at the Sharks Football Stadium in Port Harcourt Township.
Governor Fubara had earlier launched the commemorative activities with a Juma’at service on Friday, during which prayers were offered for the unity, peace, and progress of both Rivers State and the nation.
The political boycott comes just days after Governor Fubara’s return to the Rivers State Government House on September 19, marking the end of a six-month suspension.
His reinstatement followed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to lift the emergency rule imposed on September 17, which had transferred both executive and legislative powers to the federal government amid escalating political tensions.
Fubara’s suspension in March 2025 stemmed from a protracted confrontation with the state legislature, marked by impeachment threats, budgetary standoffs, and a breakdown of security. The crisis ultimately led to the invocation of Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution, resulting in the first imposition of emergency rule in Rivers State since 1999.
