MTN Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its Xtratime service, a popular feature that allows subscribers to borrow airtime and data on credit.
This decision, disclosed in a corporate filing to the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) follows the introduction of new lending lending regulations affecting such services.
Xtratime has long served as a financial buffer for million of Nigerians, enabling users to stay connected during cash shortages by repaying on their next recharge.
The telecon giant said the decision is to comply with the Digital Electronic Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025, which now classify airtime and data advances as digital credit services. Under the new framework, providers must obtain additional licensing and meet stricter compliance standards before continuing such offerings.
The company says he suspension will remain in effect until there is clearer regulating guidelines.
Despite the suspension, MTN assured customers that other recharge options remain available and that the move is not expected to significantly impact its revenue.
The development reflects increasing regulatory scrutiny over Nigeria’s digital lending space, particularly around consumer protection, debt practices, and data privacy.
