Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
In a personally signed press release titled “Letter of Resignation of Membership,” Atiku announced his immediate withdrawal from the party, describing the decision as “heartbreaking.”
This marks a significant departure from the political platform he co-founded and represented at the highest levels for over two decades.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect. As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he stated.
Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under the PDP administration, also contested for the presidency twice on the party’s platform.
He expressed gratitude for the opportunities the PDP had provided throughout his political career but pointed to deepening internal rifts as the reason for his exit.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he wrote, citing “irreconcilable differences” within the party.
While Atiku did not immediately declare his next political move, his departure from the PDP has already sparked widespread speculation about potential realignments within the opposition.
He concluded the letter with a diplomatic note, wishing the party and its leadership well in their future endeavours.
