Armed bandits have killed Hon. Muazu Zannan Gwashi, a prominent political leader in Zamfara State, despite collecting part of the ransom demanded for his release.
Zannan had spent five months in captivity after being kidnapped during an attack in July 22, 2025.
The incident occurred along the ManYaci-Bukkuyum road when gunmen ambushed the vehicle carrying PDP Chairman Hon. Muhammed Sala Wuta and others.
Wuta sustained gunshot wounds to his hand and leg, while three people, including Gwashi, were abducted.
The kidnappers initially demanded N30 million, but later reduced it to N15 million, and collected the payment.
However, they refused to free Gwashi, insisting on an additional N15 million before release.
Security analyst Mallam Bakatsine said the captors repeatedly change their demands, calling the ordeal a tragic example of the ongoing cycle of extortion.
Local residents and social media users mourned Gwashi’s death, offering prayers and expressing grief.
Zamfara continues to face persistent attacks and kidnappings across several local government areas, with both civilians and officials frequently targeted, despite ongoing security operations, banditry remains a major threat in the state.
