In response to the recent devastating flood disaster in Maiduguri and Jere, the Borno State Agency for the Great Green Wall has donated 70 three seedlings to promote environmental sustainability and mitigate climate change.
This effort comes after the distribution of non-food relief items by Non-governmental organisations involving the agency to commemorate the International Day of Peace.
The distribution commenced Monday to affected communities in the Galtumari ward.
Ambassador Aliyu Umar, Director General of the Borno Great Green Wall Agency, who, on behalf of the state government, donated the 70 three seedlings, expressed sympathy with flood victims and assured government support.
‘We are here by the directive of Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, the Governor of Borno State, to locate the affected communities and plant threes.
‘By planting more trees within our environment, we can combat climate change, erosion and flooding,’ he emphasized.
This year, the Borno State Government have launched a tree-planting exercise with 10 million assorted seedlings aimed at controlling desertification.
Bukar Dodo, who lost 97 seedlings of Mango, Orange and Guava in his farm to the flood was among the recipients of the seedlings.
‘I have been hearing the news on the radio of Governor Zulum’s effort to plant 10 million three in Maiduguri, today the gesture has reached us in this trying time of the flooding,’ he said.
Bukar appreciated the gesture and pledged to plant, nurture, and ensure the growth of the trees.
This initiative aligns with the state’s efforts to address the aftermath of the flood, which displaced Maiduguri’s residents and affected nearly 2 million people.
The Borno State Government has also distributed relief materials, including cash assistance, food items, and essential supplies which is currently ongoing.
