Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
citing undisclosed reasons, in a move that signals another potential shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a state council meeting on Wednesday, Governor Diri stated:
“Today, I have formally resigned my membership from the PDP for obvious reasons.”
Diri’s resignation comes amid a wave of defections by opposition governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom States.
Bayelsa, a key Niger Delta state with strategic economic and political importance, has historically been a PDP stronghold.
Diri’s departure could therefore reshape party dynamics in the region, potentially opening the door for APC to strengthen their presence.
