Tragedy struck on Thursday along Kente road in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba when gunmen suspected to be bandits ambushed the mother of the state governor, Jumai Kefas, and his sister, Atsi Kefas, 9News Nigeria has learnt.
The incident, confirmed by intelligence sources, turned chaotic when a police officer assigned to escort the family accidentally shot Atsi Kefas while attempting to repel the attackers.
The family was travelling through an area increasingly plagued by bandit activities when the incident occurred.
Online news outfit, Zagozola, reports that following the attack, troops promptly intervened to rescue the victims.
According to the report, Governor Kefas’ mother and sister were airlifted to safety via an air ambulance.
Atsi Kefas, who sustained injuries from the accidental shooting, was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Her condition remains undisclosed at the time of reporting.
Security forces recovered the family’s vehicle at the scene of the attack, alongside an empty magazine and the passengers’ luggage.
