Ayati village, the headquarters of Borikyo Council Ward in Ukum Local Government Area, Benue State, was overrun yesterday evening by heavily armed suspected Fulani herdsmen.
Eye witnesses have recounted that just before the village went quiet signalling that the locals were resting from their daily toils, when suspected armed Fulani bandits stormed the village, shooting sporadically and burning down houses unchallenged.
As they scamper for safety; while the deadly attack lasted. It was fun before the attackers stormed the village and rained bullets sporadically.
Ayati village is just a stone’s throw from Zaki Biam, the commercial nerve centre of Ukum Local Government and host to the International Yams Market.
With Ayati now falling to Fulani herdsmen following the sack, occupation and annexation of Tse-Senga, Tse-Agena, Tse-Iormanger, Tse-Nomjôr, Tse-Hwembe and Tse-Ikyereve, the next major port of call for Fulani herdsmen is Zaki Biam whereupon Ukum Local Government Area as a whole would be under the effective control and authority of herdsmen and local bandits. Already, accessing farms in these parts is now a matter of life and death.
As at the time of filling this report, all calls put to the Division Police Officer {DPO} prove abortive.
