The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operating licences of 46 microfinance banks across the country over their failure to meet regulatory requirements.
The apex bank announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali, stating that the revocation took effect from July 1, 2026.
The action was carried out in line with Sections 12 and 13 of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA), 2020, following approval by CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso.
According to the CBN, the affected institutions failed to meet key obligations required to remain operational, including maintaining sufficient assets to cover liabilities, remaining active in financial intermediation, commencing operations within the approved period, and maintaining the required minimum capital base.
The regulator said the move was aimed at protecting depositors, strengthening confidence in the financial system, and ensuring that only compliant financial institutions operate in the country.
