OWERRI -In what security observers have described as a significant demonstration of community-driven crime prevention, Umudibia Autonomous Community penultimate Tuesday witnessed a large-scale anti-cultism security warning march aimed at combating the growing threat of cult-related violence, organized youth gangs, and criminal disturbances within the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Fedponek axis.

The coordinated operation, led by the Umudibia Vigilante Security Outfit in collaboration with the Imo State Police Command, brought together community leaders, security volunteers, youth stakeholders, and residents in a strategic public security campaign intended to deter criminal elements and reinforce territorial surveillance across the Polytechnic host community.

The march, which moved through critical streets, student-dominated areas, and identified security flashpoints around Nekede, sent a strong message to cult groups and suspected criminal syndicates allegedly responsible for intimidation, violent confrontations, drug-linked disturbances, and other forms of social unrest within the community.

Security analysts have increasingly identified host communities around tertiary institutions as vulnerable zones for cult recruitment, gang rivalry, illicit drug activities, and youth-based organized crime due to population concentration, economic pressures, and weak informal surveillance structures.

Experts say proactive intelligence-led community policing has become essential in preventing escalation into larger security crises.
Organizers of the exercise clarified that the operation was not a protest march but a preventive security intervention designed to restore public confidence, reassure residents, and strengthen collaboration between conventional law enforcement agencies and local vigilante structures.

Addressing journalists during the operation, the Coordinator of the Umudibia Vigilante Security Outfit, Mr. Onuawuchi Anselm Ajoku, stated that the community had reached a decisive point in confronting insecurity and criminal infiltration within the area.

According to him, Umudibia can no longer tolerate the activities of cult groups and criminal gangs whose operations threaten peaceful coexistence, academic stability, and socioeconomic activities around the Polytechnic environment.

He warned that individuals involved in cultism, violent gang operations, and other criminal activities should immediately disengage, emphasizing that security agencies and community intelligence networks have intensified monitoring mechanisms capable of identifying and isolating perpetrators.

Mr. Ajoku further noted that the community’s collaboration with the police represents a broader grassroots security model focused on intelligence sharing, rapid response coordination, and sustained environmental surveillance aimed at preventing future violence.

He also called on landlords, parents, transport operators, market leaders, and student representatives to cooperate with security authorities by reporting suspicious movements and discouraging criminal behavior among youths residing within the area.

Participants in the march described the initiative as timely and necessary, especially amid growing public concerns over sporadic cult clashes, intimidation of residents, and disturbances often associated with urban student settlements.

Security experts maintain that community-backed operations such as the Umudibia initiative are increasingly becoming critical components of Nigeria’s evolving internal security architecture, particularly in semi-urban educational corridors where conventional policing alone may be insufficient.

The Imo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to strengthening operational partnerships with local vigilante formations and community stakeholders in order to sustain peace, improve intelligence gathering, and dismantle criminal networks operating around the Nekede axis.
